Muffin had her first sippy cup of kool aid while at her sitter house on Friday. That one cup has taught me a lesson at the expense of making Muffin sick. I’ve always made it clear what she can eat, or drink. However since she is older and almost 2yrs old I should revamped the list. I should of said she don’t drink any of the other drinks like Kool aid and Hi C. Just water and 100% juice that is still diluted with water. There are many kids her age drinking kool aid and pop (swearing cause it “orange” its “better” or if its sprite its okay) and having no issues. Or maybe, it is a issue and they still allow the child to drink it, reasoning that there child will get “use” to it. Well mine didn’t take to it we’ll at all.
I guess yesterday moring it had made it thru her system cause she threw up that moring. Only once but still. Then she had the runs almost every hour. Poor baby went thru a diaper a hour and her bum was red.
Each diaper change was a struggle. Seeing as I cloth diaper fulltime and was almost tempted to buy some Huggies just cause I knew I was about to be washing hell. Calling it washing hell was putting it lightly. She was soaking the diapers up left n right and they smelled terrible. It was just gross and I felt myself weaking to “dark force” of disposables.
However I stayed strong and didn’t buy any. I just took a deep breath and kept it moving. Washing more was just what it was, part of cloth diapers. Plus why spend the money when I had diapers. *darkside be gone!*
It really sucked for Muffin because she would be playing one min and then screaming the next cause she was stinging from yet another poop. I have to give kudos to my sitter for keeping a detail record of what Muffin eats and drinks so that we were able to pin point what was causing the problem. Funny thing is kool aid is a staple in my house but I just never offered her it cause of the sugar content. Didn’t ever think she would get the runs behind it. Now that I see her system is still not ready for drinks of that nature she won’t be drinking them again.
Muffin has been drinking Pedialyte and nursing mostly since 4pm yesterday. Her stool is improved and she not messing up her diapers back to back. I have been using butt paste and A & D ointment and the flaming red has calmed down enough that she don’t scream during a chance. She just fusses and Ill take fussing over screaming any day.
So do you guys offer your 12month to 2yr old any other drinks besides water, breastmilk, cows milk, soy milik, or 100% fruit juice? And if you do what kind of drinks and what kind of reaction if any.
About the coke–I love coke. As a treat. Not for babies. The problem is not having a glass of kool aid or a coke now and then, because they taste good. The problem is that many people have incorporated those thing into their daily lives and seem to think it is okay for babies.
Corbin is 2 and a half, but between 12-24 months, he didn’t drink much except breastmilk, water, and some juice. He was probably close to 2 before he would drink from a sippy cup, and he still refuses to this day to drink cow’s milk.
Thats good…He to accustomed to the best!

You touched a nerve!
When I was teaching Montessori Primary (3-6YO) I was very close to the teachers and kids in the Toddler room (our future students.) While our school had an excellent, natural, slow food diet plan, including BRAT when necessary, and allowed no home fixed lunches without a Drs exception, I saw kids coming in the morning with bottles and sippies full of tea, coke (yes, coke!) and all kinds of high sugar fruit “flavored” drinks–these were the 2-3YO’s in potty training. We confiscated those right away!
{You have to wonder why parents who were willing to pay the tuition for our school would not be living natural lives outside of school}
My son drank water and milk (I nursed him until age 2)–the milk, because I was unaware of milk issues back then (maybe the issues hadn’t yet reached the proportions of today.) I’d occasionally serve fruit juice, though I strongly prefer whole fruits, or home squeezed with lots of pulp–and rarely give babies orange juice before around 2 (some babies suffer diaper rashes with citrus)
I really hate the pressure parents are under, mostly from advertising, to serve unhealthy products as food and drink for children.
Sorry for such a long-winded response–like I said, you touched a nerve.

Awesome reply! I’m just glad someone understood where I as coming from. I don’t think kids need all those soft drinks and fruit like drinks. I can’t believe you said coke. That’s no good.
